Following the perspective of Zygmunt Bauman and Umberto Eco, we are currently living in a liquid society, defined by extended dynamics, high mobility and perpetual social change both in terms of interaction and relationship models, but also in the configuration of structures and social systems. Solid modernity has remained behind with its anchoring in very well-defined and stable values over time, with its implicit predictability, and with the constant effort to discover the deepest meanings of social reality. It has been replaced by a fluid, volatile, experimental, interrogative, exhibitionist modernity that dares to change traditions, to search for new roads and to don’t stop from exploring alternatives. In order to understand this new form of aggregation of social space, there are necessary not only new methodological tools but also the wisdom of giving up certain mental patterns that are incompatible with contemporary liquidity. What does the near future look like? But the distant future? Can the crisis of state and of ideologies be overcome? Can the idea of community be rediscovered? Can a life project be outlined if we get to know just what we do not want (and not what we want)? Are we ready for new economies? What will be the effect of migration in the medium term? Hyper-technologized and hyperlinked is meaning to live more socially or more solitary? How can we survive to this liquid social state? Is this the way to a new social paradigm or is it the paradigm itself? These are just some of the questions we will be trying to answer at the Living in a Liquid Society International Conference organized by Romanian Sociological Society and West University of Timisoara in Timișoara at 14^th -15^thSeptember 2018.

Scholars in the social sciences are invited to submit papers proposals aiming to debate such themes within the framework of the 5^th International Conference of the Romanian Sociological Society (RSS) Living in a Liquid Society, hosted by the West University of Timisoara (UVT) between 14^th and 15^th of September 2018.

Official language of the conference: English.

Location – Timisoara is a very attractive multicultural city, of roughly 400.000 inhabitants (including the metropolitan area) situated into the West Romania, in the nearby of Serbian and Hungarian borders. Access can be done by plane or train, but should not ignore the driving distance from several European Capitals: Belgrade (170km), Budapest (324km), Sofia (553km), Vienna (565km), Zagreb (674km). Timișoara was the spark of Romanian 1989 anticommunist Revolution. In 2021 the city will be European Capital of Culture.

Professor José Luis MOLINA

José Luis Molina is associate professor at the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), Spain. He is an economic anthropologist interested in the emergence of socioeconomic structures, like migrant enclaves and transnational fields. Molina is interested in mixed method approaches, combining ethnography and personal network analysis. He is interested in Southeast Europe, and Romania in particular. Currently, he is the president of the Research Ethics Committee of the UAB, co-PI with Miranda Lubbers of the research project “The Role of Social Transnational Fields in the Emergence, Maintenance and Decay of Ethnic and Demographic Enclaves” (ORBITS), and co-editor of the REDES-Revista Hispana para el Análisis de Redes Sociales.
