During the last decades the societies West and East, North and South have changed in important ways. Much of the post 1970s sociology sought to understand neoliberalism, the transformation of the welfare state, globalization, deindustrialization and the rise of high-tech sector, digital revolution and the rise of network society, deregulation of the financial sector, social movements or the post-communist transition.

The two epochal events of the last decade – 9/11 and the global financial crisis, along with longer term trends such as rise of ‘post-carbon’ society, social movements, health pandemics, immigration issues are in the process of creating new state responses and new structural relations between various social actors. This conference will attempt to take stock of the closing of a historical cycle, which has changed sociology in important ways during the last 30 years and to understand emerging structures, actors and networks in the 21st Century. The conference seeks to explore which trends of neoliberalism and globalization will fade away and which will persist after the global economic crisis and the possible end of Washington consensus. We seek papers that broadly engage such themes. The contributions may, but are not required to engage with the conference theme. Possible themes are
